Sen. Tom Carper visits Sussex Consortium

April 4, 2017

Sen. Tom Carper toured the Sussex Consortium School March 24 to learn about its outstanding students and programs. He viewed a winning Read Across America video and took time to talk to the students and the teacher involved in its creation. Students created the video to emphasize how important it is for people to share, compromise and help their peers. The Sussex Consortium video won second place among a field of hundreds of entries in the Read Across America Video Competition organized by the Delaware State Education Association.

After watching the video, Carper led a lively discussion. He heard some of the students' talent show songs and even participated in the singing. Student Laune Whaley led Carper on a tour through the building. He stopped in many rooms and watched students actively learning. He took time to read a book to the Little Vikings students.

Principal Dr. Vivian Bush said, "We are so proud and honored that Sen. Carper took time out of his busy schedule to spend some time with our program, and our students and staff. He stopped at each person he met along the tour and had a personal conversation with all. It is important for our students to know that in Delaware, the politicians are visible and are involved with the community. It puts government on a personal level for many. Sen. Carper was so gracious and engaging. With all that is going on with cuts to education funding, it carried a great deal of meaning to have him here and to see what we do every day. We could not have asked for a better tour guide, either. Ms. Whaley explained each classroom and the type of learning environment so well to the senator. She prepared well and knew so many students and staff, so she was able to introduce the senator to many people along the tour."
