Serratore reception set at Peninsula Gallery Nov. 5

October 26, 2016

Peninsula Gallery announced Pastel Progressions, an exhibit of all new work from local artist Nick Serratore. An opening reception is set for 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5. As the title suggests, he exhibit will demonstrate the continued growth of the artist as a master of pastel.

“Nick has been working in the pastel medium for over 20 years and we have watched him grow for almost as long,” said Tony Boyd-Heron who, with his wife Carol, started the gallery in 1996. “His technique and style have evolved over the years to the point where his use of bold color and blending techniques create moody, atmospheric landscapes that frame almost abstracted fields of saturated light, and the intensity of his color is particularly reflected in his wildflower pieces.”

Serratore was born and raised in Abington, Pa. He graduated from the Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia and from Wilmington University. In 1996 he relocated to Lewes. He was immediately struck by the flat landscape. Like many artists who are inspired by the place in which they live, he was influenced by the remarkable palate of colors he saw, by the vast array of textures, and by the ever changing pattern of light and shadow that he experienced. “It is difficult to describe in words the colors of the seasonal skies of Sussex County,” he said. “The hues of greens, browns and golds found in a planted field are equally indescribable. The textures of a plowed field, an isolated woodland or a crashing ocean wave are again so varied that even photographs barely do them justice. The flat plane of the earth here gives light and shadow plenty of opportunity for interplay.”

Serratore works primarily in pastels because of their brilliance and immediacy. The tactile experience of the medium and the majesty of the setting transport him into a contemplative state. It is this state and this setting that he tries to share with the viewer. His narrative landscapes first capture the attention of the onlooker before drawing them in to seek the message in the work.

In all, Serratore will have 30 new works in the show which is quite a stretch for any artist who is likely to be fulfilling other commitments at the same time. These works will vary in size from 30x40 down to 8x10. Peninsula Gallery is just across the canal at 520 E. Savannah Road in Lewes. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday.
