Shields Elementary School to celebrate 50 years Oct. 20

October 17, 2017

Students and staff at Richard A. Shields Elementary School will be celebrating the school's 50th birthday Friday, Oct. 20. During the week leading up to the celebration, students have been learning trivia fun facts from 1967 during the morning announcements.

"We're excited to celebrate this milestone with all of our students and staff," said Jennifer Nauman, principal at Shields Elementary. "We have activities planned all week long and will be hosting a carnival for students during the day on Friday."

The carnival will be managed by the fifth-graders at Shields and will include activities like Go Fish, Ring Toss, Bean Bag Throw and Ladder Golf, just to name a few. "Our fifth-grade mentors do a great job working with our younger students at the school," said Kimberly Corbidge, assistant principal at Shields Elementary. "I always enjoy watching our older students help our younger students, so this is a great way for us to bring everyone together."

In addition to the carnival Friday, students will also attend an assembly that morning with local artist John Donato. During the assembly, he will be explaining a new school project that will begin the week of Oct. 23. Once the assembly has concluded, students will sing Happy Birthday to Shields together and will also be presented with a newly framed photo of Richard A. Shields.

Before leaving, each student will also receive a small gift as part of the celebration.

Richard A. Shields Elementary School Naming History
Shields Elementary School was dedicated Oct. 22, 1967. The Board of Education chose the name Richard A. Shields Elementary to honor the memory of a man who made Lewes his home in 1928 when he moved to the small town to serve as superintendent. During his 20 years of service as superintendent, Shields made the students "his profession, his hobby, and his primary interest in life." During the opening ceremonies in 1967, Mrs. Shields presented a portrait of her husband that was hung in the library, and Mr. Shields' daughter also helped with the unveiling.
