Shields students read together in schoolwide family literacy program

July 5, 2016

For the third year in a row, Richard Shields Elementary participated in the One School One Book program. The program was implemented with ideas from Read to Them, a nonprofit organization promoting family literacy.

The organization’s mission is to create a culture of literacy in every home. This year Shields students read a Newberry Honor Book, “Where The Mountain Meets The Moon” by Grace Lin. The main character Minli, lives in the Valley of Fruitless Mountain, where she and her parents work hard in the fields. Minli loves hearing stories her father tells her about the Old Man of the Moon, who knows everything. One day she decides to leave home to look for good fortune for her and her family and find the Old Man of the Moon. Along the way encounters many interesting characters and adventures.

Every student and every Shields staff member received a copy of the book to keep. There were chapters assigned each night and each school day a different trivia question was asked during announcements. Students who answered questions correctly were given an opportunity to choose other books from a selection provided.

After the completion of the book, students participated in a red carpet celebration and were provided fortune cookies and pencils provided by Shields PTO. Students were excited to participate and are already wondering what book they will read next year.
