Shirley Anne Maloney, taught exercise programs

November 3, 2017

Shirley Anne (Collings) Maloney, 78, of Henlopen Acres, was granted her angel wings Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and close friends.

Shirley was a native of Delaware, born Saturday, Sept. 2, 1939, in Lewes, daughter of the late Walter A. and Alice E. (Ulary) Collings. She was a graduate of Lewes High School, Class of 1957 and studied at Goldey-Beacom College and University of Delaware.

Shirley had many passions, including being a wife, mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed exercise, cooking for her family and friends, horseback riding, poodles, bird watching, and the beautiful jewelry her beloved husband bestowed upon her. Shirley loved taking long trips on the roads less traveled with her husband.

During her lifetime, Shirley volunteered teaching Aquasize programs at the YMCA, Pot-Nets, the Glade, and Rehoboth Beach Country Club for over 25 years. She loved walking on the beach with her children on summer days, and hosting fun dinner and cocktail parties with good music and dancing. Shirley enjoyed riding her bicycle with her poodles prancing along by her side, and sipping champagne while she watched sunsets with her beloved Jimmy. Her beautiful smile and kindness will always be remembered.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her brother, Walter Zane Collings; and her youngest daughter, Darcey Gail Maloney. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Capt. James G. Maloney Jr.; her son, Mark Graham Maloney; her daughter, Stacey Anne Maloney; her grandchildren: Matthew James and Natalie Anne Belvedere; and her beloved dog, Max.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the staff at the Country Rest Home for the wonderful care they provided to Shirley.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at Lewes Yacht Club.

Arrangements handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Shirley's memory to Delaware Valley Alzheimer's Association, 399 Market St., Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
