October 20, 2017

Cape senior setter Logan Shuttleworth picked up the 1,000th assist of her high school volleyball career Oct. 19, as Cape defeated the Senators 3-0 in front of a cheering Cape gymnasium crowd.

It didn’t take long for Shuttleworth reach the milestone, as it came on the third point of the match. She had reached 999 assists in the win over Sussex Academy Oct. 17. She ended the match with 24 assists, nine digs and eight kills. She also served two aces.

Freshman libero Emily Lamb continued to dominate digs with 17, while Alex Chiartas picked up nine digs. Senior Sophia Spinelli knocked down 13 kills while garnering nine digs.

“I’m really happy with how we finished the Dover match.,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “They’re probably the most improved team in our conference and played a really tough, physical match. I thought we responded well and held our own. It was great to be able to celebrate Logan’s accomplishments after the match as well. She’s up there as one of the hardest workers I’ve ever coached or played with. The fact she reached 1,000 assists is impressive, but even more impressive, she did it in 3 years. Those types of numbers usually occur with 4-year starters. It’s a testament to her consistency, athleticism, and desire to see her teammates succeed.”

In the Friday night contest with Conrad, the Vikings fought hard but fell to the visitors 18-25, 14-25 and 17-25.

Logan Shuttleworth, Sophia Spinelli, Emily Lamb and Katie Knarr teamed for a total of 60 digs in the match, but it wasn’t enough for the powerful front line of the Red Wolves, who moved to 8-5 on the season. Cape is 9-5 and is still clinging to hopes for a postseason appearance.

“We just couldn’t execute, and Conrad had a great libero who played very well,” said Cape captain Logan Shuttleworth. “They were scrappy and very disciplined.”

“Conrad played a strong and consistent game, “ said Coupe. “They were extremely disciplined and poised, and forced us in many uncomfortable positions. They’re a top 10 team in the state, who losing to doesn’t have to be a bad thing. I thought we did a a decent job pushing them out of system; however, they remained focused and limited their errors even when out of system. We didn’t respond very well and at times let our emotions get the best of us. I’m hoping the girls will refocus and come out re-energized for Tuesday’s match vs. Caesar Rodney.”

The Lady Vikings will host Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Oct. 24.
