Skim-A-Thon for childhood cancer raises funds

Get Well Gabby Foundation raises $4,348.52
June 20, 2016

The annual Skim-A-Thon for childhood cancer was held June 18 at Tower Road beach south of Dewey Beach, where nearly 50 people, young and not so young, took part in skimboarding, surfing, ping pong, rope toss, corn hole and other fun-filled activities.

The main reason for the day was to raise money for the Get Well Gabby Foundation to fight childhood cancer. Gabby Vogel was a beautiful young girl who was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 5 years old and passed away just three months and 12 days later Sept. 11, 2011, just days before her sixth birthday. Her family is honoring her memory with Believe in a Cure, Get Well Gabby Foundation.

The mission of Get Well Gabby is “to raise money for childhood brain cancer research to help find a cure. To assist in the care and well-being of children and their families who are battling childhood cancer. To provide resources for families so they can stay with their child as they fight the disease, and to spread awareness of all types of childhood cancers. And to believe we will find a cure.”

According to the American Brain Tumor Association, more than 28,000 cases of brain tumors in the United States are in children under 20 years old, and there are 130 different types of brain tumors, which makes diagnosis and treatment difficult.

The Skim-A-Thon and its fundraising participants raised $4,348.52 for the Get Well Gabby Foundation.
