Special screening of ‘The Opera House’ set at CAT Feb. 11, 13

February 7, 2018

On Sunday and Tuesdays, Feb. 11 and 13, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Cinema Art Theater will present two special screenings of “The Opera House,” an entertaining and enlightening documentary about the construction of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Susan Froemke's new film surveys a remarkable period of the Metropolitan Opera's rich history and a time of great change for New York. Featuring rarely seen archival footage, stills, recent interviews, and a soundtrack of extraordinary Met performances, the film chronicles the creation of the Met's storied home of the last 50 years, against the backdrop of the artists, architects and politicians who shaped the cultural life of New York City in the '50s and '60s. Among the notable figures in the film are famed soprano Leontyne Price, who opened the new Met in 1966 in Samuel Barber's “Antony and Cleopatra;” Rudolf Bing, the Met's imperious general manager, who engineered the move from the old house to the new one; Robert Moses, the unstoppable city planner who bulldozed an entire neighborhood to make room for Lincoln Center; and Wallace Harrison, whose quest for architectural glory was never fully realized. “The Opera House” offers a rare glimpse into the genesis of one of the most important cultural institutions in the country.

The screening time are 1 p.m., Sunday, and 1 p.m., Tuesday. Tickets can be purchased online or, if seating is available, at the Cinema Art Theater, starting 30 minutes prior to the screening. Admission for a screening is $13 for RBFS and MET members and $15 for future members. All screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater located at 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, behind the Lewes Wawa.
