Peninsula Gallery to grow funds for Garden for All Ages in Lewes

Springing into Summer reception set April 1
March 23, 2017

There are many examples of the business and nonprofit sectors within Lewes coming together to expand the significance and beauty of Lewes. As part of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Tulip Celebration in April, a partnership has blossomed among the Peninsula Gallery of Fine Art and Framing and Lewes in Bloom, Art in Bloom and the proposed Garden for All Ages.

During April, the Peninsula Gallery is hosting Springing Into Summer - a show of 60 images by 12 local painters and three photographers. The gallery will donate 10 percent of its proceeds of the sales of these images to the Garden for All Ages for a future art-related project. Also, there will be a raffle of a framed acrylic painting by Lewes artist Jane Ellan Golde.

To kick off the month-long show, a reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 1, at Peninsula Gallery.

The raffle for the Golde painting will be held throughout the month at the gallery. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. The winner will be notified Monday, May 1.

The Peninsula Gallery is one of the largest fine art galleries in Delaware, providing 3,000 square feet of display and custom framing space. Carol and Tony Boyd-Heron, owners, have always considered the gallery to be an extension of their home. There are works by upwards of 30 local, regional and international resident artists on display. Work changes on a regular basis, so there is usually something new to see.

A committee of Lewes in Bloom, Art in Bloom's mission is to enhance the beautification and cultural environment of Historic Lewes and the community at large by means of public art. While Lewes in Bloom is best known for its award-winning beautification through floral displays and landscaping, Art in Bloom seeks to add outdoor art such as sculptures, and perhaps murals and mosaics, in Lewes' parks and other public spaces to enhance the cultural beauty of the city.

The proposed Garden for All Ages, which would be overseen by Lewes in Bloom, will create a multiuse space in Lewes for the enrichment of children and families for environmental awareness, public gatherings, and appreciation of the beauty of nature. It is hoped that the garden, located in Stango Park and the area in back of the new library, will be completed within two to three years. Fundraising efforts are just beginning.

Lewes in Bloom is a volunteer organization of more than 180 members. Each year its members volunteer hundreds of hours planting thousands of bulbs and plants throughout the city. It promotes the beautification and maintenance of Historic Lewes and the community at large. It is dedicated to helping Lewes boost its attractiveness through a variety of efforts including historical preservation, environmental awareness, a children's garden, floral displays, and more. Once finalized, Lewes in Bloom will oversee the Garden for All Ages. With Lewes in Bloom's assistance, Lewes won the America in Bloom Circle of Champions Award for small towns at the 2015 America in Bloom Symposium in Holland, Mich.
