State agencies want input on bicycling

Officials seek to build on momentum with coordinated effort
February 20, 2017

Delaware state transportation officials and the Statewide Bicycle Policy Plan Working Group have scheduled a public workshop from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown, to solicit ideas to improve bicycling across the state.

“Despite the progress we have made to improve bicycling both for travel and recreation, we still have work to do to ensure Delawareans get the full benefits of bicycling,” said Anthony Aglio, who is managing bicycle planning for Delaware Department of Transportation.

At the workshop, state officials want input from bicyclists of all skill levels and prospective bicyclists, as well as noncyclists.

DelDOT and its partners, including the Department of Economic Development, the Division of Public Health and Delaware State Police, are embarking on planning that will define a broad vision for bicycling. The process will evaluate opportunities to improve policies, programs and processes relating to bicycling.

DelDOT and its partners will then develop an action plan to implement the recommendations.

“The purpose of this effort is to take the existing momentum, which has never formally been coordinated across all of the stakeholders, and focus our efforts to lead to more people bicycling comfortably and safely,” Aglio said.

“I envision this process leading to improved coordination among stakeholders and greater clarity in the processes we use to plan and develop bicycle facilities,” said DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan. “This work will make Delaware a much more bicycle-friendly place to live and ride.”

In addition to the public workshop, the public can learn more about the project and comment by going to deldot.gov/information/projects/blueprint_bicycle_friendly_delaware.
