Striders and surfers share the big dune at Herring Point starting line

October 21, 2017

Striders and surfers shared the big dune overlook at Herring Point on a Sunday morning Oct. 15. A grey day threatened to clear off, leaving mild temperatures, no wind and no bugs.

The Herring Point 5K and 10K race is an idyllic venue and vista, yet the race remains quaint, with just 41 finishers in the 5K and another 36 in the 10K.

Kenny Riedel was DJ for the event, and when he played “Cool Jerk,” surfers and striders affected looks of wonderment, “Is he talking about me?”

Tyler Blades, 15, from Frankford, won the 5K in 20:32. He was followed by John Blackford in 21:54, Alex Arnold in 22:00, Leslie Wright in 22:52, Steven Grande in 24:39 and Tim Abbott in 24:44.

Natalie Krul, 32, from Rehoboth Beach was the first woman in 26:00. She was followed by Merrilee Seidman in 27:49, Cassidy Kemp in 28:05, Cheryl Arnold in 29:24 and Kelsey Alexander in 29:29.

Martin Rodriguez, 35, from Selbyville, was the overall winner in the 10K, setting a personal record of 37:25. He was followed by Griffin Lipman in 40:33, Breck Vanderwende in 43:37 and Daniel Damiani in 44:27.

Janine Valerio, 25, from Millsboro was the first 10K finisher among women, in 44:37. She was followed by Keren Rams in 51:53, Linda Schwartz-Chi in 54:55, Nina Smeltzer in 55:51 and Sheila Young in 56:40.

The next Seashore Striders event is the 15th annual Mariner’s Bethel 7-Miler/5K trail run Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m., at the Assawoman Wildlife Refuge, Camp Barnes, in Bayard. The event benefits Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church youth ministries.
