Suffragette Movement program set for Oct. 26 in Rehoboth

Reservations are required
October 22, 2016

The Sussex County Republican Women's Club invites everyone to attend their dinner meeting Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m., at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach. For required reservations contact Linda Rehm, 302-430-0329, or  jlrehm@aol.com.

The featured speaker, Chan Cosans of North East Maryland, will introduce those attending to the early beginning of the woman's suffragette movement. Today everyone takes for granted the right to vote as an established part of law and history as a nation. However, it was a long and sometimes painful journey from the formation in 1869 of the National American Woman's Suffrage Association, led by Susan B. Anthony, to what is now known as The League of Women Voters.

During this struggle, many were arrested in their attempts to vote. Susan B. Anthony actually did cast a vote in the 1872 presidential election, was arrested, convicted and ordered to pay a o$100 fine. She refused to pay and passionately stated, "I shall never pay one dollar of your unjust penalty." She never did, and her likeness was later struck by the U.S. mint on the one dollar coin.

It was this journey which actually started in the early 1800s that finally culminated in the ratification of the Constitution's 19th amendment on August 26, 1920. It states, "The rights of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex."

It is the mission of the Sussex Country Republican Women's Club to assist in the election of Republican candidates, act as an advocate for the Republican Party's principles, and empower women to participate in the political process. SCRWC, the largest Republican Women's Club in Delaware, has been actively engaging women in the political process for more than six decades. For additional information go to www.SCRWC.net.
