Sundance surf and turf draws athletes of all types

September 1, 2017

The weather was nice and the ocean was choppy for the Aug. 27 Sundance surf and turf combination platter that featured a biathlon, 5K or just a half-mile swim. There was also a one-mile walk and sashay, whatever one’s predilection.

Austen Cave, the 16-year-old cross country runner from Delmar, won the 5K in 16:17. He was followed to the finish line by Craig Eppler in 16:56, Jeff Young in 17:13, Francisco Puac in 17:43 and Martin Rodriguez in 18:10.

The women’s 5K saw Susan Dunn, 40, former Delmar hockey player, run 21:12 for the win. Dunn was joined on the leaderboard by Carly Jornlin in 21:35, Mardiny Ung in 22:41, Jackie Quigley in 23:26 and Meryl Ludwig in 23:41.

The top two finishers in the biathlon were Leyi Lin, 38, in 32:42 and Darin Slade, 51, in 33:16.

The top two women were Margaret Colvin in 36:07 and Sophia Sawicki in 37:18.

Father and son Steven Haer, 44, and Ben Haer, 6, walked a mile on the boardwalk in 9:40.

Talbot Jacobs was first in the half-mile swim in 8:29, while Thomas Weeks was second in 9:45.

The top three women in the half-mile swim - and third, fourth and fifth overall - were Nicole Jassie in 15:01,  Beverly Palmer in 15:47 and Mary Jean Schmitt in 15:47.

There were 116 runners, 14 in the mile walk, 59 who elected the biathlon and another 13 athletes in the half-mile swim.

“Things went off without a hitch or glitch,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth. “The City of Rehoboth does a great job accommodating the race. The Rehoboth Beach Patrol keeps the swimmers safe. And CAMP Rehoboth helps out with all the logistics. This was the eighth annual and it has become one of the fun August events of the summer.”
