Sussex County Genealogical Society to meet May 19

May 16, 2018

The next meeting of the Sussex County Genealogical Society will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, May 19, at Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. Author and local historian Ed Okonowicz will discuss his book, "Tales Tombstones Tell." The program features regional folklore, tombstone symbolism, architecture and inscriptions, as well as several local ghost stories and legends.

Okonowicz is the author of more than 24 books on Delmarva culture, oral histories, folklore and writing. A Delaware native, he is a graduate of Salesianum High School and the University of Delaware. A business meeting will follow the presentation.

The SCGS is dedicated to promoting genealogy and education to encourage and instruct in genealogical research. The scope of interests reaches far beyond Sussex County, and members concentrate on providing good and useful information to those researching their ancestry. SCGS has monthly membership meetings from September to May with informative and helpful presentations.

The Educational Committee holds multi-week spring and fall discussion groups. A special-interest group called Genie Bytes for online research has grown from members' suggestions. For details on all club activities, go to www.scgsdelaware.org.
