Sussex County Republican Women’s Club supports protection of Inland Bays

March 18, 2018

Sussex County Republican Women’s Club members welcomed Chris Bason, executive director of the Center for the Inland Bays, as guest speaker at their February meeting at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach. As a Delaware native, Bason has a lifelong passion for the environment of his home state.

The center was established in 1994 as one of 28 National Estuary Programs, six years after the U.S. Congress had declared the Delaware Inland Bays to be an estuary of national significance. The 292 square miles of the Inland Bays watershed drain to 35 square miles of bays and tidal tributaries, collectively known as an estuary. This is where freshwater rivers meet the ocean, and they are among the most productive places on the planet. These estuaries support 80 percent of the world’s fish and shellfish. This is why it is so important to work with legislators and businesses to ensure the future health of this beautiful natural resource.

SCRWC wants to encourage its members, and everyone who calls Delaware home, to get involved in the projects promoted by the center. Homeowners should learn the best ways to care for their lawns to minimize pollutants that may run into waterways, thus helping to keep Delaware water “so clear you can see your feet.” Volunteers are needed as  citizen scientists to join the fish and horseshoe crab surveys beginning in April. SCRWC wants to ensure the Delaware Inland Bays are left healthy and bountiful for generations to come.

It is the mission of the Sussex County Republican Women’s Club to assist in the election of Republican candidates, act as an advocate for the Republican Party’s principles, and empower women to participate in the political process. SCRWC, the largest Republican women’s club in Delaware, has been actively engaging women in the political process for more than six decades. For more information, go to www.scrwc.net.
