Sussex Cyclists hold Ride of Silence

May 29, 2017

Sussex Cyclists led a group ride, May 17, in the 13th annual Ride of Silence, a national silent procession of cyclists held in memory of those who have been killed or injured while riding on public roadways. Troop 7 Delaware State Police escorted the procession’s 8-mile ride, from Dartmouth Drive in Lewes to the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal bridge in Rehoboth and back.

The event also recognizes National Bike Month and promotes Share the Road to raise awareness of motorists, police and city officials.

Mike Tyler recalled the inaugural ride in 2003, when Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was struck by the mirror of a passing bus and killed.
