Sussex Master Gardeners spring workshops begin April 3

March 27, 2018

The Sussex Master Gardeners announced their schedule for spring workshops on a wide variety of topics. Classes are free, unless otherwise specified, and held at the Elbert N. and Ann V. Carvel Research and Education Center, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown.

Master Gardener Betty Layton will present a workshop on accessible gardening titled Garden Smart, Garden Easy at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 3. Attendees will learn what tools and techniques are available for gardeners as they age or develop mobility issues, so gardening can be enjoyable again

Author and plants woman Ruth Clausen will speak about her book “50 Beautiful Deer Resistant Plants” at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 17. Keeping a garden safe from deer is as simple as choosing the right plants. Clausen introduces the most versatile and drool-worthy options: white snowdrops that bloom in the spring; shade-loving, electric-gold hakone grass; long-blooming Texas sage in vibrant reds, peaches and pinks; and the feathery foliage of Arkansas blue stars that glows golden in the autumn. Books will be available for purchase at about $20. After the presentation, Clausen will be available to sign books.

Master Gardener Bill Huxtable will lead Shade Gardening at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 24. For gardeners who are wondering what plant or plants to use in shady areas, there are a number of choices. Handouts will be available to assist in picking the perfect plant.

Master Gardener Tracy Mulvaney will hold a craft workshop making seed tape cards and other items for gifting to gardening friends at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 8. Children and grandchildren are welcome to attend this fun workshop, limited to 25 participants. Fee is $5.

Master Gardener Terry Plummer will present Landscaping with Native Perennials at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 15. Participants can learn how to make garden life easier, with less watering and less fuss, by planting native perennials for a delightful landscape. Plummer will introduce a wide variety of native plant materials that will draw insects and the birds that love to eat them to the garden.

Preregister for workshops by contacting Tammy Schirmer at 302-856-2585, Ext. 544, email her at tammys@udel.edu or go to http://extension.udel.edu/lawngarden/mg/sussex-county/workshops.
