Tennis anyone?

July 13, 2017

It's Wimbledon time again and, as usual, it has not disappointed. There have been some very good matches to follow this year.

Roger Federer and Venus Williams are both really turning back the clock at Wimbledon and playing like they did in much younger days. Federer has gotten some help from other opponents who were unceremoniously knocked out of the tournament because of injury or just good, close matches.

This included the big upset when Andy Murray lost to the very inconsistent American player Sam Querrey. Murray would definitely have been a strong contender to beat Federer, but now we wait to see how the new lineup plays out. Novak Djokovic had to retire from his match in the quarterfinals with an elbow injury, and Rafael Nadal was defeated in a great (extremely long) match with Gilles Muller.

Wimbledon really needs to consider having a tiebreaker format like they use in the US Open for the last set if they don't want to spend the money to have lights on every court.

On the women's side, Venus Williams is playing this Wimbledon like she knows it is her last, best shot to win another Major. Saturday morning will bring a very intense match to watch because Venus will be playing her fellow Grand Slam champion Garbina Muguruza, who won the French Open two years ago. That is going to be a must watch TV tennis event.

Baseball is now heading into the second half of the season. I will only be talking about the good teams in the weeks ahead. There are quite a few contending teams that could win the World Series this year. You have the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have more than 60 victories already this season, and the Washington Nationals, who are dominating the National League East.

In the American League. the teams to watch are the Houston Astros, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. If the Houston Astros make it to the World Series, I will be cheering for them. They have never won in their 70+ years of existence. That would make me feel less numb from the awful season that the Phillies have given us.
