Tennis gets back into swing despite cold and windy weather

March 14, 2018

Fighting the stiff breezes, the damp conditions and the snow geese flying overhead, the Cape tennis teams are continuing to practice toward the 2018 season.

The Cape girls’ tennis squad looks to improve on its 2017 record of 9-6 and return to the Henlopen Conference Championships, where they took third place overall. All returning starters are back in the mix this season: Maryann Tietbohl, Alyssa Spell, Marcella Sabbagh, Amanda Sponaugle, Anna Harrington, Mel McCloy and Taylor Smith. Yuxin He returns after a season hiatus.

Maryann Tietbohl took fourth place in the conference tournament at first singles, while the first doubles team of Melanie McCloy and Amanda Sponagle placed third. The second doubles team of Anna Harrington and Taylor Smith also placed third.

“Our girls are very competitive,” said Cape coach Laurie Carter. “We have not yet prepared the lineup, but it will be interesting.”

Returners for the boys’ squad, which went 3-11 in 2017, are Harrison Gale, Chase Toback, Noah Brozefsky, Luke Gladfelter, Sam Luciano-Solomon, Henry Clampitt and Matt Gille. Newcomers vying for top spots are Dylan Kaplan, Colby Dominick, Adam Meacci and Uly Slagle.

“We are looking to make a four-win improvement and finish with a .500 record,” said boys’ assistant coach John Myers. “We have 11 players who are working for seven varsity spots.”

The Vikings will open their season with Milford Thursday, March 22. The girls will travel to Milford, while the boys’ squad will host the Bucs at home.
