Thanks for column on sea-level rise

November 28, 2017

Thanks for the Nov. 28 Don Flood article on sea level rise, the Tidewater film and the Dec. 4 live-stream on the same topic at the Inn at Canal Square in Lewes. I noticed that the Navy officers in Virginia quoted by Mr. Flood say that sea level rise is happening and the land is subsiding, the same as we face here in Sussex County.

We can fix this problem by switching to clean energy everywhere. In fact, the Navy and the whole U.S. military are doing their part by installing solar and energy-efficient technologies.

If a disaster or attack disables the public grid, independent sources of energy, like solar/batteries, allow U.S. bases to maintain power.

We believe the first best step to managing climate risks such as sea level rise is to reduce carbon, methane and other greenhouse gases, by putting a price on them. Each ton of carbon from oil, coal, natural gas, that enters the economy should have to pay a slowly increasing fee. The money could be used as a dividend check given to every American household every month to help pay for the increasing cost of energy and products that are carbon-intensive.

This gives a market-based incentive to people and businesses, governments and nonprofits to move to clean energy and energy-efficient practices.
