Thelma Atkins McClure, Diamond State retiree

Thelma (Toby) Givens Atkins McClure, 84, of Georgetown died peacefully at home Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017.

Mrs. McClure was born in Georgetown Nov. 11, 1932, to the late Raymond and Ethel Givens. She graduated from Georgetown High School in the class of 1950. She was awarded the first Babe Ruth Award which was given to the outstanding male and female athletes in the class. She married Joseph E. Atkins, and together they raised three sons.

Ms. McClure worked at various positions within the Diamond State Telephone Company (now Bell Atlantic/Verizon) for 34 years. After retiring, she worked part time for the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Givens Flowers. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Mrs. McClure loved to watch sports on television, and in person at her sons' and grandchildren's games - never missing one. She loved the Phillies and the Eagles.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Joseph Atkins in 1989; her son Donald Atkins in 1974; her second husband Walter McClure in 2003; and her siblings: Merrill, Kathleen, Pearl and Marie. She is survived by her sons Raymond (Bonnie) of Georgetown and Keith (Bernadette) of Fenwick Island; grandchildren Brian Atkins (Gabriella) of Georgetown, Kelci Atkins and Marisa Atkins of Lewes; her brother Ralph (Toby) Givens (Carol) of Georgetown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at noon, Monday, Aug. 7, at the Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 N. Bedford St. in Georgetown, with Pastor Rebecca Collison officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. till noon at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Asbury Cemetery, Georgetown. A luncheon will follow at Wesley United Methodist Church, Jones Hall.

The family would like to thank VITAS Hospice and the caregivers who were so kind and caring during her final weeks. Special thanks to Shirley, Donna, Julia, Tiffany, Maria, Melissa, Mariah, Amy and Lisa.
