Think Beyond Pink women’s wellness conference set Oct. 28

Think Beyond Pink, a women's breast health and wellness conference hosted by Beebe Healthcare Women's & Children's Services and Tunnell Cancer Center, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Millsboro Civic Center. "Think Beyond Pink is a day aimed at empowering women in our community to think about their health," said Judith Ramirez, EdD, manager of oncology population health at Tunnell Cancer Center. "It's an opportunity for us to bring together those we already may know - our tribe, so to speak - and meet other women in the community to start a conversation about health. It's also a great opportunity to hear from local physicians and healthcare providers about topics and current trends in women's health."

"Women's health is a hot topic in the media, whether it be in the magazine, newspaper, radio or television. And, breast health is front and center, especially during October - Breast Cancer Awareness Month," said M. Lisa Attebery, DO, a general surgeon specializing in breast surgical oncology with Beebe General Surgery. "We know there are certain risk factors that are genetic; however, we need to talk about all the risk factors and how they impact all areas of our health,  not just our breasts."

"Being able to communicate about sexual health with others including sexual partners and healthcare providers is key to getting the most out of your healthcare experience," said Adeline Nukuna, MD, who will speak on the topic of sexual health during the conference. "As women, we often know when something just isn't right. We need to learn that we can start these discussions with our healthcare providers."

Attendees will connect with women in the community and learn ways to take charge of their own health. There will be yoga, wellness activities, free health information, and community resources and giveaways. A continental breakfast and a bagged lunch will be provided.

"While October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women's health is so much more than breast cancer," said Lisa Klein, nurse manager of women's health at Beebe Healthcare. She will discuss health screenings during the conference. "Women need to know that there is more to monitoring their health than mammograms, and while all the talk about when or how often may seem overpowering, they can take their concerns to their healthcare provider to determine what health screenings are right for them."

Participants will also have the opportunity to talk to Beebe's nurse navigators: Deb Campbell, MSN, RN, cancer screening nurse navigator; Kathy Cook, MSN, RN, breast health nurse navigator; and Carrie Snyder, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, women's health nurse navigator.
