Tourist at Home spotlights local theater, performing arts options in Sussex County

March 23, 2018

Great news! Though the weather outside may still be a little unpredictable, this is the perfect time to catch a show at one of southern Delaware's many theaters and performing arts centers. Not in the know about all the options? Join us for an armchair tour of some of Sussex County's best selections.

Starting in northern Sussex County, we'll visit the Second Street Players at Milford's Riverfront Theater to savor community theater in a vibrant downtown location. The playhouse offers a variety of live performances throughout the year, including musicals, dramas, original works and a children's theater. Don't miss the new monthly Saturday night classic film for just $5. It's a fun way to introduce your kids to (or reacquaint yourself with) an old favorite. To purchase tickets, go to www.SecondStreetPlayers.com or call 302-422-0220.

Next, we'll head to Georgetown to Possum Point Players, a southern Delaware favorite that delivers captivating shows in its 184-seat Possum Hall. Area residents and visitors have been enjoying exceptional productions from Possum Point since 1973. The community actors and directors deliver a rousing collection of shows each year and have separate, well-developed youth workshops and productions by Possum Juniors. To purchase tickets, go to www.PossumPointPlayers.org or call 302-856-3460.

For a wide-ranging variety of entertainment, Milton Theatre offers a huge array of engaging events, including plays and musicals, film screenings, live music, comedy shows and burlesque revues. This multifaceted performing arts center in downtown Milton highlights local, regional and national talent with several events each week. The popular matinee children's shows and events allow even the youngest guests to enjoy lively and interactive offerings. To purchase tickets, call 302-684-3038 or go to www.MiltonTheatre.com.

We'll step back in time at the Clayton Theatre, Delaware's only single-screen theater showing first-run films. The 350-seat theater was built circa 1948 and still retains much of the charm of that era. Located in downtown Dagsboro, the Clayton Theatre is a delight for fans of the art deco-style venues of the past. Opt for a Monday evening visit and you'll be treated to a classic Hollywood film for just $5. Some screenings are dedicated to raising funds for local nonprofits, so be sure to check the website, and you may find both a nostalgic favorite and the opportunity to help a worthy cause. For more information, go to www.TheClaytonTheatre.com or call 302-732-9606.

Heading toward the coast, Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Cinema Art Theater just off Coastal Highway in Lewes brings education, enrichment and entertainment to the area with a mix of independent films, documentaries and local favorites. Cinema Art Theater is a film lover's nirvana with a programming and screening focus ranging from local to international. The stimulating Wednesday afternoon Wrap Chat series presents a current film screening with an invitation to discuss it afterward with other film enthusiasts. For more information about offerings, go to www.RehobothFilm.com.

Clear Space Theatre in downtown Rehoboth Beach is one of the area's hardest-working performance companies with nearly 150 performances including plays, musicals and revues each year. The location provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy downtown Rehoboth shopping and restaurants in the off-season. Founded in 2004, Clear Space has garnered a generous following and fan base for its acting, directing and gorgeous costumes. For performance listings and to purchase tickets, go to www.ClearSpaceTheatre.org.

For a unique visual treat, stop in at Dickens Parlour Theatre in Millville for a 7 p.m. magic show with complimentary popcorn. Dickens has entertainment for young and old alike with performances that will leave you second-guessing your own eyes. Dickens Parlour Theatre has the charm of an old Victorian theater and brings in talent from around the country to delight the audience. To purchase tickets, go to www.dptmagic.com or call 302-829-1071.

Southeast of Dickens, you'll find the Bethany Area Repertory Theater in Frankford. Founded in 2012, BART's mission is to provide quality theater to the Bethany area. Having moved from its home at the Dickens Parlour Theatre last year, BART is performing this spring at the Windsong Country Inn on Dirickson Creek Road. For more information, go to www.bartinbethany.com.

We are fortunate to be in an area with so many quality options to enjoy performing arts and theater. Near each playhouse and theater are fabulous cafes, diners, restaurants and coffee shops to round out a fantastic excursion. The warmer months will bring even more opportunities for arts and entertainment.

As always, safe travels, and please watch your speed as you travel through our small towns. Speed limits are enforced. To do more armchair exploring of Southern Delaware, go to www.VisitSouthernDelaware.com, then go take a ride.
