Troy Humphries scores golden goal in 98th minute again

Vikings beat Sussex Academy 2-1; Adam Krim saves 19 shots
September 12, 2017

Cape soccer players knew they were up against a formidable team Sept. 8, when Sussex Academy came to Legends Stadium for the opening game of the 2017 soccer season.

“A line runs right down the middle of the Henlopen Soccer Club,” said Cape’s Patrick Kilby. “The players know each other and knew it was going to be one heck of a soccer match, just like last year.”

The Vikings beat the Seahawks in 2016, in double overtime, 1-0, in the 98th minute of play, when Troy Humphries snuck a ball past SAS goalkeeper Adam Krim, who had an incredible 28 credited saves in that game.

At the highly anticipated rematch, Ryan Burke scored seven minutes into the game for the Seahawks off an assist from Kannex Camarco, but Burke also was awarded an early yellow card. Zach Gelof got Cape back to level, ripping the net at 25 minutes off an assist from Aiden Spoor.

A second yellow card was awarded to Burke, which put him out of the game in the first half and the Seahawks a man down the rest of the contest.

Cape took control of the game and put a bevy of shots on Krim, a 21-5 advantage for the game, but the senior was insane, making acrobatic sliding, diving and high-flying saves, some with his feet, others punched away with his fist.

“I have no words to describe Krim’s performance; it was just awesome,” Kilby said. “You just have to love the kid.”

Humphries of Cape loves Krim well enough; they are soccer friends, but in the 98th minute, it was Steely Dan time, “Let’s go back, Jack, and do it again,” as Humphries found himself on the far post on a pass from Christopher Gonzalez and suddenly, boom, back of the net for the golden goal and Cape win.

“It is crazy,” Humphries said after the game. “Adam played such a great game. I didn’t think we’d ever get one past him.”

Krim, a stand-up goalie and sportsman, congratulated Humphries after the game. “Our team played well, especially man down, and Kannex [Camarco] went out for awhile with leg cramps. We were missing two of our best guys up top.”

Krim said he hasn’t begun to look at colleges, but there is little question they are looking at him.

Cape will slide back into the nonstick skillet Tuesday, Sept. 12, hosting Indian River. The Seahawks will host Dover.

The Indians, coached by Steve Kilby, lost to Tower Hill 4-2 in the Division II state finals last season.

Krim recorded 19 saves in the game, while the combination of Alan Marin and Jakob Gelof combined for four saves.

Cape won the JV game 2-1 on first-half goals by Nathan Loucks and Danio Somoza-Lima.
