UPDATE: Rehoboth man fatally struck on Route 1 southbound

Police: Pedestrian was wearing dark clothing, not crossing in crosswalk
October 25, 2017

Delaware State Police say a 54-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck about 7:49 p.m. in a motor vehicle crash on Route 1 near Old Landing Road.

A 66-year-old Millville man was driving a 2015 Mercedes-Benz in the center lane on southbound Route 1. A pedestrian attempted to cross Route 1 directly in the path of the Mercedes-Benz. The driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck him, forcing him onto the hood and windshield before he fell off in the middle of the far left lane. The victim, 54-year-old Irving T. Cannon of Rehoboth Beach, died at the scene of the crash.

The Mercedes-Benz came to a controlled stop in the southbound shoulder, south of the collision and remained at the scene. The operator and passenger of the Mercedes-Benz were properly restrained and uninjured as a result of the crash. Alcohol and driving at an unsafe speed are not factors.

Police said Cannon was wearing dark clothing that was not reflective, and he was not carrying a light nor crossing in a crosswalk. Alcohol is being considered as a factor on his part.

Southbound Route 1, south of Old Landing Road, was completely shut down for about three hours. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into this incident and asks anyone with information to contact Detective J. Burns at 302-703-3266. No charges have been filed at this time.
