On the third Wednesday evening each month, the lights of the Milton Theatre dim and the auditorium fills with musical chanting.

Kirtan, dubbed a transcendental jam session, is a type of meditation led by Cape Henlopen High School graduate Madhuri Pura Dasa.

Kirtan is described as a form of Bhakti yoga that dates back thousands of years to India. Singing and chanting are accompanied by musical instruments and drumming, while the audience is invited to participate by chanting, clapping and dancing.

“It encourages people to come together,” said Dasa, who described Kirtan as a heart-opening experience.

Kirtan returns to the Milton Theatre at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20. Admission is $5 per person, and free for children 12 or younger. Donations are welcome and a complimentary vegetarian meal also is provided.
