Vikings Lacrosse Camp develops champs

Kesmodel and Bartley team up to mold future champions
June 24, 2016

With 28 years of head coaching experience, and five Maryland and eight Delaware state championships under his belt, P.J. Kesmodel and his protege Meg Bartley, a former Cape and Virginia Tech all-star, assembled the best coaching staff in the country to teach girls ages 8-15 the basics of the finer points of lacrosse at P.J. and Meg’s Vikings Lacrosse Camp at Cape Henlopen High School June 20-22.

Campers learned everything from the basics to cutting-edge stick work and advanced instruction on shooting, cutting, dodging, offensive and defensive strategies, and positioning. Experts in the art of taking the draw gave instruction on how to win that important possession. The group also took part in small-game scrimmaging and competitions. Bruce Leibu, a former Division I goalie from Hofstra, gave individualized goalkeeper instruction. There was even small-group instruction for novice players to increase their skills in a comfortable setting with knowledgeable instructors.

“We break down the basics and provide teaching points to help the players’ skills become more effective,” said camp director Meg Bartley. “The coaches gave lots of tips and feedback to help the girls refine their skills. Most importantly, we try to implement fun activities throughout the day. We believe that learning the fundamentals of lacrosse is important, and complementing the drills with fun games and activities leads to a great atmosphere. Our hope is to create a place where the girls feel comfortable learning, building skills and growing their enthusiasm for the game.”

A rising sophomore and junior lacrosse clinic was also held June 20-21, where players increased their skills while boosting their confidence and learning advanced techniques of lacrosse.

When camp concluded, a personalized report card was given to each camper.
