Vikings place fourth at conference championships

The Cape Vikings traveled to Snow Hill, Md., Jan. 21, taking part in the Henlopen Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with an indoor field of Cape, Sussex Tech, Caesar Rodney, Dover, Smyrna, Lake Forest and Seaford. The boys finished fourth overall with 83.5 points for the day and were led by three conference championships, a second-place finish and a third-place finish.

Wardell Allen led the Vikings with 26 points, winning the long jump with a leap of 21-feet-1.5-inches and the 200 meters in 24.2 from the slow heat and earning a fourth in the 55 meters in 6.91 seconds. Deandre' Sheppard scored 18 points with a win in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet even and a second in the 55 meters in 6.82. Allen and Sheppard combined for 44 points of the team's 83.5 points in the meet. Raiquan Mosley grabbed third in the shot put with a throw of 43-feet-7.5-inches. Distance runner Sam Nye finished fifth in both distance races with a 4:51 in the 1,600-meter run and an 11:12 in the 3,200-meter run. The Vikings also finished fourth in both the 400-meter and 800-meter relays.

The girls finished fourth overall as well with 72.5 points for the day and were led by three third-place finishes and three fourth-place finishes. Freshmen Ceyra Middleton and Vianna Iacona both were third in their events in their first high school conference championship. Middleton threw 33-feet-11.75-inches in the shot put for the bronze medal, and Iacona ran 7.80 in the 55-meter sprint. Cape was also third in the 800-meter relay in 11:35 with the team of freshman Zoe Callard, Grace Brokaw, Blair Hill and Yesenia Ramirez. Brokaw also was fourth in the 3,200 meters in 13:46 and the pole vault in 7 feet even, while DaJonte Mackey was also fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.31.

“Grace was a nice 10-point addition for us, as she placed in all three of her events along with doing double duty being a member of the swim team," said assistant coach Gilbert Maull.

Last Chance Invite

The Vikings girls competed in the final Snow Hill competition Jan. 27, called the Last Chance Invite, along with 12 other teams. Cape scored 62 points to finish fourth overall, competing in a few selected events where athletes were close to state-qualifying marks.

DaJonte Mackey tallied 16 points to win the triple jump in 32-feet-5-inches and was third in the long jump in 15-feet-6-inches for her team. Teammate Marnae Duffy was third in the triple jump in 30-feet-11-inches, while the 800-meter relay team of Sam Wyatt, Grace Brokaw, Zoe Callard and Yesenia Ramirez was also third in 11:38.

Brokaw and Lauren Kelly were fourth in the pole vault at 7 feet even.

Chakyriah Wright was fourth in the triple jump in 29 feet even, while Zoe Callard was fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:44. Freshman MacKenzie Parker was fourth in the shot put in 27-feet-9-inches.

The Delaware State Championships will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, in Landover, Md.

Valentine's Day 5K

The 11th Valentine's Day 5K will take place from the fishing pier at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes Sunday, Feb. 14, just two weeks away. The race will start at 10 a.m. and will feature an out-and-back 3.1-mile course to the Great Dune Overlook and back. Most of the race is on the multi-use bike path. Runners can go to www.seashorestriders.com to get registered online or can register race day beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the fishing pier. Register early and we will see you at the starting line.
