Vikings volleyball spikes IR 3-0

Cape evens record at 1-1
September 23, 2016

The Cape volleyball team moved to 1-1 on the season with a 3-0 win over a scrappy Indian River squad Sept. 20 in Frankford. Senior Taylor Collier led the Lady Vikings with seven kills while serving up four aces. Junior transfer Sophie Spinelli made six kills and six digs. Junior Logan Shuttleworth recorded 18 assists and five digs. Senior Abby E’Nama served six aces and roofed three blocks. Senior Maddie Holt and freshman Teaghan VanBrunt each had five digs.

The Indians were led by Shelby Cannatelli with three aces and four digs in the Indians’ loss. They are 1-2 so far this season.

“I'm very happy with how we responded, coming off a rather flat loss to Smyrna,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “From the opening point I loved our energy and enthusiasm. Indian River was fundamentally sound and made us work hard for our points, and I think we did. Our serving was much more aggressive. At the net we were very physical. We were getting touches on a lot of balls. If not stuffing them on their side, we were at least slowing it down for our side.”

Coupe was quick to praise the play of his upperclassmen.

“Cailey [Thornberg] really led the way at the net, where she was extremely active, and Sophie [Spinelli] and Abby [E'Nama] were not far behind,” he said.

“We definitely played better as a team, so much better than we did last game,” said senior Cailey Thornberg. “We all came together, and I thought the energy was there from everybody, and it was a just like a fun, good game from all of us on the court. It was so exciting. Their crowd was very vocal, and we were just fighting through the crowd.”

The Vikings have a tough schedule coming up starting Friday, Sept. 23 with Polytech, then Lake Forest and Sussex Tech next week.
