Volunteers pack Thanksgiving dinners for thousands

Mountaire’s annual event feeds 49,000 Sussex residents
November 23, 2017

For 23 years, Mountaire has helped spearhead the Thanksgiving for Thousands food drive. Over those years, more than 147,000 boxes to feed more than 663,000 people have been delivered to families in need in the Sussex County area.

The food drive is capped off with an annual packing event in a Mountaire warehouse in Selbyville. More than 200 volunteers gathered Nov. 20 to pack 8,500 boxes to feed up to 49,000 people.

Each family food box contains a roaster chicken, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce, gravy, canned yams, stuffing mix and brownie mix, enough to feed six people per box.

On packing day, Mountaire warehouse staff loaded pallets of food boxes in refrigerated trailers destined for the Dagsboro Church of God and distribution sites in Seaford and Milford. From there, boxes were given to people Nov. 21 who were identified as having a true need.
