Wescoats Corner area already too congested

April 14, 2017

I am writing in response to the article "Neighbors: Proposed fitness center out of scale" from your April 11 edition. The reason for my letter is I feel the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission is out of touch with the traffic situation in the Five Points area.

One of the stipulations the article noted is the developer would be required to contribute nearly $24,000 for road improvements at the Wescoats Road and Savannah Road intersection.

There is no problem at this intersection! It is already controlled by a traffic light and in the event you don't make it through the first time, the cycle is very short so it won't be long before you can proceed.

The real problem is at the Old Orchard Road and Savannah Road intersection. It is impossible to turn left out of Old Orchard nor cross Savannah Road. The $24,000 would be better used adding a traffic signal to this interchange. Whoever approved the Walgreens and car wash to be built (and add to the traffic dilemma) without mandating these businesses provide funding to help make this intersection safe, was completely out of touch with the traffic here.

I agree with Mr. Coupe's claim that the building of this fitness center may add to the traffic in their neighborhood. The drivers wanting to cross Savannah Road or go left from Old Orchard Road are currently using the Five Points community roads to avoid the hassle of this intersection.
