Westminster Presbyterian Church bids choir director farewell

George Johnson retiring after many years of service
June 11, 2017

Westminster Presbyterian Church recognized retiring Music Director George Johnson for his many years of service to the congregation at the morning services May 28.

Preceding the service, the choir gathered with Johnson for a final photo. As the service began, flutist Diane Deming joined him in a Bach duet, "Sheep May Safely Graze." Over the years, the two have frequently performed together. Continuing the musical theme, the choir performed "Seek Ye the Lord" by John Varley Roberts with Randy Huber as the tenor soloist. Interestingly, early in his career, Johnson himself had often performed the solo. For their second anthem, Johnson picked "Fight the Good Fight," arranged by John Gardner. He noted that week after week as he struggled to pull the volunteer choir together, he often felt that they were fighting a good fight!

Honoring Johnson, Pastor Frank Deming celebrated "the Singing Saints" in his sermon. His concluding prayer thanked Johnson for the time and talent he had invested at Westminster helping make a joyful noise. It was Memorial Day weekend, so after a moment of silence, the service ended with everyone joining in the hymn, “America the Beautiful” followed by the choir's rendition of "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" by Peter Lutkin.

Retiring to the Fellowship Hall, the congregation honored Johnson's 14 years of service to Westminster with a special luncheon. Both Betty Carnahan and Harry Marshall spoke of Johnson's dedication and devotion to the choir and church. The pastor continued with prayer and blessings expressing the wish that Johnson's heart would carry the Lord's song forever. The Fellowship Committee presented him with a cake.

Earlier, at a farewell party hosted by Suzi Berry, the choir presented Johnson with their thanks for his direction and leadership, with a beautiful painting of a local beach tower by local artist and church member Fay Kempton.

Johnson's presence at Westminster Presbyterian will be missed in the months ahead, but the music will continue. Sally Waugaman, who has frequently substituted for Johnson, has agreed to serve as interim music director. All are welcome on Sunday mornings; during July and August, services are held at 8:30 and 10 a.m. The rest of the year, services are at 10 a.m. The church with "Room for All" is found at the corner of Laurel Street and King Charles Avenue in Rehoboth Beach.
