William Harvey Showell, master carpenter

William Harvey Showell, 86, of Long Neck, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of Sam Houston Showell Sr. and Imogene Ittel Showell. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hilda Megee Showell; and sons Glenn Showell and his wife Cathy, and Gene Showell and his wife Anne, all of Long Neck.

Also surviving are his granddaughters, Jennifer Showell-Hartogs, Adrienne Showell-Phillips, Gretchen Anne Hegwood and Lisa Holleger. There are nine great-grandchildren.

He is survived by a brother, John R. Showell and his wife Louise of Lewes; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Sam H. Showell Jr. and Linda B. Showell.

Mr. Showell had been a master carpenter and had worked with John Collins Construction. He was a graduate of Millsboro High School Class of 1949. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran where he served as a combat engineer. He was the president of White House Beach Inc., vice president of Long Neck Water Co., and was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge #12 in Georgetown.

He enjoyed riding his golf cart around the White House Park and visiting with their residents. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching football; he was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, Jan. 24, at noon, at St. George’s Chapel Parish Hall, 20274 Beaver Dam Road, Rt. 23, Harbeson.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Arrangements are in the care of the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin, Md.
