Willie Hughes, retired surveyor

Willie Hughes, 75, of Georgetown, passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.

Willie was born May 20, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late William and Ella Mae Hammond Hughes.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army July 23, 1961. After his discharge from active duty, he went on to serve in the Army Reserves until his retirement May 20, 2002. While serving as an Army recruiter, Willie met and later married his wife of 39 years, Vera Fields Hughes. As a civilian, Willie worked as a surveyor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, DNREC, Division of Soil & Water Conservation, until his retirement in 1990.

Willie was a member of Mt. Zion Church, Georgetown. In the community, he devoted his time to the development and leadership of our youth as a member of the United States Jaycees, Georgetown Chapter; Pop Warner Board of Directors participant and Big Brother volunteer for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Delaware program.

Family and friends may call for viewing and visitation Wednesday, Dec. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro. Interment service, with the conferring of military honors, will immediately follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. Pastor Ralph Harmon will be the officiant.
