Writers’ guild events Sept. 24, 30 promote new Rehoboth anthology

September 22, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach Writers' Guild will hold two book-signing events the last week of September in support of its new anthology, “Rehoboth Reimagined.” The first will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 24, at Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach. Contributing writers attending this event are Russell Reece, Irene Fick, Jessica Gordon and Marjorie Weber. The second event will be from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 30, at Rehoboth Beach Public Library, with contributing writers Bill Hicks, Sharon Sheppard and Jack Mackey.

"We are thrilled by the warm reception we have received from local bookstores and libraries," said Maribeth Fischer, executive director of the Rehoboth Beach Writers' Guild. "This was truly a collaborative project for our guild members, and to see the community embracing our efforts is affirmation of the guild's story-sharing goals."

“Rehoboth Reimagined” is an anthology of 18 short stories and 10 poems that were inspired by unattributed, vintage photographs archived at the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and Museum. "The process of bringing these stories and poems to life challenged guild writers to create a world of their great-grandparents' time," says Cindy Hall, guild member and book editor. The result is a volume of engaging and varied fictional works that imagine life in Rehoboth at the turn of the 20th century, and the photographs that inspired them. The 1899 Falmouth wreck sparks a short story of love and bravery from one writer, a story about the Bad Weather Witch from another, and poems from two others. A tale of deception and intrigue is triggered by a photo of a man holding an umbrella. One 1916 photo of friends on the beach so sparked the imagination of writers that the collection includes six short stories inspired by it.

Readers interested in a behind-the-scenes discussion about the process of creating this anthology can go to www.sowhatsyourstorypodcast.com/episodes to listen to a podcast with Cindy Hall aired on NPR station WSDL 90.7 Sept. 16. "Saltwater Media in Berlin, Maryland produces a segment for NPR called 'So, What's Your Story,'" said Hall. "The producers, Stephanie Fowler and Tony Russo, speak with writers about the story behind the story and were interested in how the guild's anthology came together."
