Plenty of comments to go around

February 15, 2016

It pays to keep your ears open whenever Sussex County Council members meet.

NO STINKING BADGES – Councilman Rob Arlett is an honorary troop commander at Delaware State Police Troop 4 in Georgetown. Arlett said he is taking part in a program to learn more about how DSP operates.

“And you don't have a badge?” asked fellow Councilman George Cole.

Arlett laughed and replied, “No. But I'm not saying I don't want one.”

NEVER MISS A MEAL – During a recent sign ordinance workshop, food was served because the workshop started at 11:30 a.m. Sussex County Council members are fed well when their meetings overlap meal times.

“It's a working lunch, and I'm working on the food,” Cole said as he munched on potato chips.

WIDE LOAD – Councilwoman Joan Deaver said she was attending a meeting where a speaker opened his talk saying that he has cousins wider than some Sussex County roads. Deaver said she took exception to the remark. “We are not slower lower,” she said, referring to the popular Slower Lower Delaware slogan.

On that topic, there is some confusion. Is it Lower Slower Delaware (LSD) or Slower Lower Delaware (SLD)? A company based in Millsboro has been selling SLD merchandise for more than 20 years. Somewhere along the line, someone came up with LSD – there is a Facebook page at least – and you see LSD stickers on vehicles all over the place. Perhaps it would be wise to change everything over to SLD to officially cut any ties to the hallucinogenic drug.
