A strong storm with heavy rain and powerful winds hit the Cape Region Sunday, May 11, and Monday, May 12. Trees, like this one hanging on the power lines at the intersection of Olive Avenue and First Street in downtown Rehoboth Beach, were down all over the area. Intermittent power outages occurred throughout the Cape Region with as many as 20,000 customers out of power early Monday morning. The Russell W. Peterson research vessel made a distress call from waters off Rehoboth Beach at 7:56 a.m., Monday, May 12. A crew member rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard arrived at Peninsula Regional Medical Center with no vital signs.

Shown holding their certificates (not in order) are Lois Gillespie, Peggy Tappan, Leigh Hill, Carole Woodyard, Carolyn Marshall, Mary Sue Colaizzi, Barbara Paulish, Lisa Searles, Jane Wyatt, Silvia Ritchie, Lucy Fleming, Judy Stingel, Pat Torelli, Carolyn Trout and Tracy Mulveny.
