Several Sussex Countians were presented with awards Oct. 24, during the annual meeting of the Delaware chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Newark. Monroe and Jamie Colvett of Milton, left, were presented the Norman Cohn HOPE Award, which is the top honor bestowed to members by the society. Cheryl Jankowski, holding the plaque, and Maryanne Murray of Griswold Special Care in Lewes accepted the Friends of MS Society Award, which is given to individuals, organizations or corporations for their outstanding support of the Delaware chapter during 2009.

Millsboro family gives
$30,000 to Easter Seals

Charlie and Sandy Zeiler of Millsboro presented a $30,000 check from the Zeiler family trust to Bill Adami, president and CEO of Easter Seals Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore Tuesday, Nov. 10. The check was in honor of C.F. Zeiler & Co. Inc.’s 30th business anniversary working with the Delmarva Poultry Industry. Bayhealth offers breastfeeding classes
Bayhealth Medical Center offers free breastfeeding classes and support groups. All classes are free and taught and facilitated by a board-certified lactation consultant. For more information, call 302-744-7135 or toll-free at 877-453-7107, or Wendy Lovette at 302-744-6229.

Joint replacement class meets Mondays
Bayhealth’s total joint replacement classes familiarize patients scheduled for a total joint replacement with the expected plan of care. The class includes a tour of the nursing unit and inpatient therapy department. Classes meet from 9 to 11 a.m., every Monday, in the Total Joint Center’s Community Room on the third floor of Milford Memorial Hospital. To register, call 430-5600.

Bayhealth Medical Center offers support for challenging pregnancies
Bayhealth Medical Center Education Department offers telephone support for pregnant women on bed rest. Educational materials to prepare parents for childbirth and breastfeeding are sent to high-risk women, who have been put on bed rest, or have other hardships preventing them from attending classes at the hospital. Women in need of this service will receive weekly phone calls to discuss reading material, answer questions and provide support. For details, call Wendy Lovette RN, LCCE, IBCLC, at 302-744-6229.

Program addresses children’s mental health
People’s Place, in conjunction with the Mental Health Association of Delaware, is offering a monthly support group for parents of children diagnosed with mental health issues. The group meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the second Monday of each month, at the People’s Place Counseling Center in Milford. The meetings are free and confidential. New internist joins Beebe medical staff
Dr. Kim M. Kuczinski, a board-certified physician in internal medicine, has joined the Beebe medical staff. She is sharing an office with Dr. Bhaskar Palakar at 1526 Savannah Road, Lewes. Kuczinski, who is a member of the Beebe Physician Network, has come to Lewes from Temple University Hospital, where she was a hospitalist and an adjunct assistant clinical professor. She earned her medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. CHEER offers caregiver resources
Caregivers often become very isolated and feel alone in the daily tasks and challenges of caregiving. CHEER provides families and caregivers with a wide range of educational articles, web links, and programs, services and resource materials on topics related to caregivers and their needs. The Long Neck CHEER Center has a caregivers resource center to help those in need. A resource person will be available from 10:30 a.m. to noon, every Wednesday in November, to answer questions and provide information. For details, call Robin Greene at 945-3551.

Course addresses mental healthcare
National Alliance on Mental Illness in Delaware Family-to-Family Education Program is offering a 12-week course for family and friends of individuals with mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Taught by trained National Alliance on Mental Illness in Delaware members, this course provides caregivers with information about medications and strategies for handling their loved one’s mental illness. Caregivers meet monthly locally
A caregivers support group for those who take care of Alzheimer’s patients meets the third Thursday of each month, at Gull House. Call Kathleen Graham Frey at 226-2160.

Rehoboth Beach Yoga to offer free yoga demonstrations in November
Rehoboth Beach Yoga is offering three free demonstrations for those who would like to learn how yoga techniques can relieve acute or chronic pain. Svaroopa yoga teaches the simple poses that release tensions created by gripping muscles attached to the skeletal bones along the spine. The full yoga breath is taught at the beginning of each session, and the client is fully supported while in a position of complete relaxation. Attendees will see an actual demonstration of yoga in action. Free demonstrations are scheduled for 3 p.m., Wednesdays, Nov. 4, Nov. 11 and Nov. 18. MS support groups to meet
Shore Group Two, a multiple sclerosis support group, meets from 1:30 to 3 p.m., the second Wednesday of each month, at the CHEER Center in Georgetown. Prenatal yoga helps women with deliveries
Chelsea King is offering an ongoing prenatal yoga class from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesdays, at Rehoboth Beach Yoga. The classes focus on releasing the muscles at the base of the spine and pelvis to provide a more comfortable pregnancy, an easier and faster delivery, and a quicker recovery. Guided awareness and breathing exercises are part of every class to provide relaxation, healing and a connection to the body and baby. Moms new to Svaroopa yoga must be at least 12 weeks pregnant before beginning the class. This class is also beneficial for couples trying to conceive. The cost is $20 for walk-ins, $70 for four classes and $130 for eight classes. Those who sign up before Tuesday, Dec. 1, will receive a free class. Beebe cancels all free flu shot clinics
Beebe Medical Center has announced that all free flu immunization clinics are cancelled. Despite continued efforts to obtain vaccine for seasonal flu, the supplier, Sanofi Pasteur of Swiftwater, Pa., reported only 100 of the 2,200 doses of the seasonal flu vaccine that were ordered are available to be shipped to Beebe Medical Center.
