Fire safety class held

The Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company made a visit to Rehoboth Cooperative Preschool Oct. 21. The preschoolers got to take an exciting fire truck ride, and the firefighters gave a presentation about fire safety to the children. Tech superintendent honored

Dr. Patrick Savini, superintendent of the Sussex Technical School District, was recently honored by the Delaware Legislature for his many years of service to the school district and Sussex County, and for his coordination of the yearly Schoolwide Advisory Committee Dinner. Read Aloud training held

The Jefferson School in Georgetown encourages its students to realize the importance of social commitment and giving back to the community. As participants in the Read Aloud Delaware program, The Jefferson School students in first through eighth grade were trained Oct. 19 by the Read Aloud Delaware Sussex County Coordinator Ann R. Gorrin to read one-on-one with preschool-age students. A partnership between The Jefferson School and Telamon Head Start in Georgetown has been in place for several years and will continue through the 2009-10 school year. Customers of Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach voted for the winners of the shop’s Fourth Annual Pumpkin Decorating contest Sea Witch Festival weekend, Oct. 24-25. Elementary school teachers entered their classes in the contest with pumpkins donated by Fifer Orchards. Browseabout Books sponsored the contest to promote produce grown in Delaware. The top-six winners were Hedgehog Class Pet, Karen Masone, fourth grade, Rehoboth Elementary School; Charlotte’s Web Pig, Kimberly Kneipp and Jacqueline Kisiel, fifth grade, Rehoboth Elementary School; Bulldog, Stephanie Shuttleworth, first and second grade, H.O. Open house presents program information
Connecting Generations will host an open house event from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16, at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. The public is invited to this free session, where Marie McIntosh and Jim Wilson will offer information about Creative Mentoring, Seasons of Respect, Creative Transitions and Connecting Generations, programs that help children and adults reach their full potential. Cape Henlopen High School’s class of 1999 will hold its 10-year class reunion from 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, Nov. 27, at Salt Air Restaurant on Wilmington Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased before the event at Salt Air Restaurant or Hammerheads in Dewey Beach or by email to cape99reunion@gmail.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the door the day of the event, but reservations should be made in advance by email to the above address or by calling Katie Owens Joseph at 684-4559. Facebook members can join the group Cape Henlopen class of 1999 to receive updates.

Book fair set for Nov. 13-14 at Delaware Tech
The public is invited to attend a Scholastic Book Fair hosted by the Education Club from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13, in the Student Services Center; and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, in the William A. Carter Partnership Center at Delaware Technical & Community College in Georgetown. Books will be available for all ages; the selection will include fiction and nonfiction books, recipe books, posters and craft kits. Proceeds will benefit local charities which serve children. Sussex Tech Pumpkin Fest is Nov. 7
Sussex Technical High School will host a Pumpkin Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, in the new cross country field, across the road from Sussex Tech on Route 9, five miles west of Route 113. This event is a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House Charities and is open to the community. The event features games and events for all age levels including a fun run, pumpkin pie-eating contest, pumpkin-themed baked goods contest, children’s games and many more activities. This is the same date as the 8th Grade Open House, so all are welcome to come across the road after touring the school.

The Cape Henlopen High School class of 1979 is planning a 30-year reunion starting at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Greene Turtle in the Villages of Five Points, Lewes. Find Cape Grads project seeks volunteers An appeal goes out to all Cape Henlopen High School graduates who would like to give back to their school and community. Anyone interested in the Find Cape Grads project and the eventual development of the Cape Henlopen Alumni Association can email Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation board member Chris King, Christinedking@comcast.net or contact the Cape Henlopen School District office at 645-6686 with their contact information.

Vendors are needed for the annual Santa’s Workshop
Event to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday and Friday, Dec. 3 and 4, in the Commons Lobby area at Sussex Technical High School near Georgetown. Tables cost $25 each or $40 if electricity is needed. Items being sold should be approximately $10 to accommodate the budgets of the students. Club offers before- and after-school care
The Georgetown Boys & Girls Club provides before- and after-school child care for ages 5 -13. Enrollment in the program includes:
• Transportation from Georgetown Elementary, North Georgetown Elementary, Georgetown Middle School and Sussex Academy of Arts & Science
• Power Hour homework help
• Nutritional snacks
• Daily physical education (Catch Kids Club)
• Computer and internet access.
The club is open on Indian River School District inservice and inclement weather days and can provide memberships to parents who only need care for their children on these days. The licensed child-care facility is open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Purchase of Care Plus is accepted. Call 856-4903 to ask about qualification.

State chamber seeks Superstar entries
Applications for the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce Superstars in Education Awards have been sent to schools across Delaware. Schools that have developed programs that show measurable results and raise student achievement are encouraged to apply. Funded by the business community, Superstars in Education is a statewide program that awards Delaware educators who have implemented and sustained a creative, innovative program or a teaching practice that works to increase student achievement and test scores. Since its inception in 1989, more than 230 outstanding programs have been recognized. The application deadline is 4:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16.
