The Sussex C.A.R.E.S. Conference, formerly the Live Conference hosted by the Sussex County Advisory Committee on Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Warren L. and Charles C. Allen Jr. CHEER Community Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road east of Georgetown. This conference is geared to seniors, the disabled, and caregivers both paid and unpaid, as well as those just wanting to learn about challenges that could face people as they age. Registration is $10 and includes a buffet lunch. Sussex CARES stands for Creating Awareness of Resources for Every Senior in Sussex County.

From Beach Babies to Beach Boomers: The Journey to Independence After a Diagnosis is the conference title. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about challenges faced by people as they age and the resources available to help them cope with those challenges. There will also be an opportunity for the attendees to ask questions of the presenters and to visit at least 20 vendors.

Topics of the day include changes and new Sussex County services for seniors, by Dava Newman, director, Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities and Laura Howard, deputy director; neurological problems as people age, by Dr. Lawrence Kemp, Atlantic General Hospital; and cancer and the older population from Kaye Webb, program coordinator, Cancer Support Community, and Debbie Campbell, RN, cancer screening nurse navigator, Tunnell Cancer Center, Beebe Healthcare.

There will be presentations of services and resources by CHEER, Easter Seals, Alzheimer's Association, and the Aging and Disability Resource Center.

Those in attendance will be treated on a lighter note to a skit by Mr. Goodwood, aka Ken Huff, encouraging people to have a different type of talk with their elders from the one parents had with children when they were younger.
