Cape soccer holds end-of-season banquet

Vikings face St. Georges Saturday in DIAA tournament
November 11, 2017

The Cape Henlopen soccer team held its end-of-season awards banquet Nov. 8 at The Cultured Pearl in Rehoboth Beach. The good thing for the Vikings is that the season hasn’t ended yet, as the team will travel to Dover High School Saturday, Nov. 11, to meet St. Georges High School in the first round of the DIAA Division I State Tournament. The 12-3 Vikings are the fifth-seeded team, while the 11-3-1 Hawks are the fourth seed. The winner of the match will face the winner of Saturday’s Salesianum versus Charter match Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Smyrna.

Winning team awards at the banquet were Uly Slagle, Offensive MVP; Dane Palmer, Defensive MVP; Luke Mulcahy, Defensive MVP; Gerardo Haro-Simental, Varsity Sportsmanship Award; Aidan Spoor, Defensive MVP; and Zack Gelof, Team MVP.

Members being honored for making the all-conference team were Connor Rasin, honorable mention; Dane Palmer and Aidan Spoor, second-team defense honors; Jake Gelof, second-team goalkeeper; Luke Mulcahy, first-team defense; and Uly Slagle and Zack Gelof, first-team all-conference and first-team all-state. Gelof was also named a Delaware Top 11 team member, Henlopen North Player of the Year and Regional All-American.

Coach Patrick Kilby gave kudos to the three defensive MVPs.

“I couldn’t pick just one of these players,” he said. “Aidan, Luke and Dane have been such great defenders for us. They are the best defense out there. It went from me saying Luke, Dane and Aidan to ‘the original three’ when speaking to the team.”

Kilby was also complimentary to his offensive players.

“Uly Slagle and Zack Gelof are great offensive players,” said an emotional Kilby. “Uly led the state in assists [17] and Zack scored the most goals [28] in the state.”

Gelof is the only soccer player in Cape history to be chosen as an All-American, Kilby said.
