Ventrice O. Roy, active in her church

  Ventrice O. Roy, 90, of Georgetown, transitioned from this life to her heavenly home Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes. She was born June 18, 1927, in Pungoteague, Va., to the late Jessie Ewell Nock and Margaret Nock.

"Odetta," as she was affectionately called, received her education in the Accomack County Public School system.

She gave her life to Christ at an early age. Years later, she relocated from Denton, Md. to Millsboro, where she became an active member at Friendship United Methodist Church. Known as the "Mother of the Church," she served as the president of Friendship's Senior Choir, a Communion Steward, and as a member of the "Women of Wisdom" ministry.

She was employed in the '70s at Seaview Department Store in Fenwick Island as a seamstress. After retirement, Odetta continued her sewing as a hobby for family and friends. Odetta's greatest joy was taking care of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Odetta was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Roy; two sons, Louis J. Sturgis and Allen J. Sturgis; six sisters; Lottie, Gertrude, Katie, Winnie, Dorothy and Hennie; a daughter-in-law, Judy K. Sturgis; granddaughter, LouJean Sturgis; and a cousin, Mary Francis.

Left to cherish her memories are a son, Donald L. Sturgis of Selbyville; adopted grandson, Kevin Sturgis and wife Fedessia, of Hurlock, Md.; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Sturgis of Houston Texas, and Vonda Sturgis, Snow Hill, Md.; two sisters, Shirley Johnson and Clementine Baines; two brothers-in-law; Elwood Roy, Greenwood, Md., and Bobby Roy of New Jersey; 10 grandchildren, Donald Sturgis Jr. and Shawn, Mona Purnell and William, Beverly Blake and Quincy, Keith Sturgis and Tykeisha, Rodney Fisher and Veronica, Marie Welch and Warnie of Houston, Robin Jackson of Houston, Sterling Chandler and Terrance Chandler, both of Selbyville, and Pat Johnson of Millsboro; and, a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and a host of special friends.

Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at St. John 2nd Baptist Church, 26602 Mt. Joy Road, Millsboro. Public viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. The funeral service will begin at noon.
