DelCollo joins practice in Millsboro
The newest practitioner at Mid-Atlantic Family Practice, Dr. Jason DelCollo, always knew he would end up a family doctor.
“The first picture I drew in first grade was of myself as a doctor,” said DelCollo, who joined Mid-Atlantic in October. “My mentor was an osteopath, so during college, I felt that was the direction I wanted to go.”
He completed his studies at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a residency in the Philadelphia area, and then landed his dream job in Millsboro.
DelCollo, 30, of Aston, Pa., moved to the Angola area with his wife, a medical school graduate who works in the emergency room at Beebe Medical Center. He said they liked the friendly people and the relaxed atmosphere of the Cape Region.
DelCollo’s parents are part-time residents in the Lewes area and during visits, DelCollo noted how residents smiled and chatted at the grocery store.
“We found we loved the area and the people, so we decided we would try to move here after medical school,” DelCollo said. “We love the pace and the people of the Cape Region and are happy to make our home here."
Mid-Atlantic Family Practice is building a sister location in Millsboro that will mirror the building on Route 24 outside Rehoboth. Until it opens next spring, DelCollo and his officemate, Daryl G. Sharman, MD, will see patients in a Beebe-owned building on Mitchell Street in Millsboro.
“Everything I read about Millsboro made me really want to come here,” DelCollo said. “There’s such a need for physicians, as well as someone to act as intermediary because there is such a long wait for specialists like dermatologists and sports medicine physicians.”
DelCollo works with patients to determine when a specialist is needed. Then, by making contacts with area specialists, he hopes to work directly with them, so patients don’t have to endure months-long waits to get an appointment.
In addition to serving family practice patients, the Millsboro location will feature x-ray, CT and mammogram scans, and a lab to better serve the community, DelCollo said.
“We want to create a medical home for patients,” DelCollo said. Another physician will be added when the new building opens.
DelCollo's residency at Crozer-Chester Medical Center with offices in Springfield, Pa., and Upper Darby, gave him a look at medical services both in a city and a suburban setting. He said he delivered 55 babies during his residency, but he also worked with children and adolescent patients, as well as older patients dealing with arthritis.
“One of the reasons I chose Mid-Atlantic Family Practice is because they continue to focus on education,” DelCollo said. “Every Friday, they have meetings and classes here. These are doctors that are always learning. That’s what I was looking for in a practice.”
DelCollo said he hopes this well-rounded experience will serve him well in Sussex County.
“It’s all about the patients and providing a service for them,” DelCollo said. “My philosophy is to keep people out of the hospital.”
