Motorist advisory:  Hurricane Sandy impacts Delaware Memorial Bridge operations

October 29, 2012

Due to the wind conditions from Hurricane Sandy, Delaware River and Bay Authority officials have implemented speed and lane restrictions on the Delaware Memorial Bridge this morning.  The sustained winds are currently in the 35 mph range.
The speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph and the outside lanes of both spans of the Delaware Memorial Bridge are closed to traffic.  The Authority may ban tractor-trailers trucks, motorcycles, and other high-profile vehicles subject to high winds from the Delaware Memorial Bridge, if sustained winds exceed 40 mph.
The authority will continue to closely monitor the flow of traffic across the bridge.  Depending on bridge conditions, additional restrictions may be implemented.  The potential of a full bridge closure may occur if sustained winds exceed 50 mph.
The DRBA will make every effort to keep its bridge facility open as long as conditions are deemed safe to do so.
The DRBA is working closely with both New Jersey and Delaware State Transportation departments as well as neighboring bi-state agencies to exchange information and monitor the impacts of Hurricane Sandy on the region.
DRBA officials strongly advise that motorists avoid any unnecessary travel today and tonight. Travelers are urged to call the Delaware Memorial Bridge at 302-571-6368 for current information about traffic conditions or follow them on Twitter @demembridge.
