Historic Sussex business damaged by fire

November 19, 2012

A Sussex County landmark was heavily damaged in a Nov. 12 fire. Ten fire companies responded to the 9:11 p.m. blaze at Burton Bros. Hardware, in operation for 119 years on High Street in downtown Seaford. The State Fire Marshal's Office said the fire started on the second floor and damage was estimated at $500,000. The cause has not been determined. Firefighter Rick Marvel, who owns the business with his brother, Ron, was injured and is being treated at Crozer Burn Center in Philadelphia. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
