John Walter Birney, Sun Co. retiree

John Walter Birney, 96, a resident of Rehoboth Beach since 1986, and formerly a 35-year resident of Brookhaven, Pa., died peacefully at his home Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012.

Jack retired in 1971 as a quality assurance inspector at Sun Co., Marcus Hook, Pa. He was a member of the Chester Masonic Lodge (formerly Scott Lodge) and a member of Conley’s United Methodist Church, Lewes.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marjorie Taylor Birney; daughter-in-law, Barbara A. Birney of Wallingford, Pa.; grandson, John Worrall Birney Jr. (Page) of Towson, Md.; granddaughter, Elizabeth B. Tyson (Tyler) of Sanatoga, Pa.; and four great-grandsons: John W. Birney III, Carter P. Birney, Zachary R. Tyson and Luke B. Tyson. Jack was preceded in death in 1962 by his first wife, Margaret Worrall Birney; in 1989 by his son John Worrall Birney Sr.; in 2004 by his son, Richard A. Birney; in 1994 by his sister Hazel Phillips Ford; and in 2012 by his sister Mildred B. Collison.

A memorial service will be held at noon, Friday, Nov. 30, at Conley’s United Methodist Church. Interment will be held privately at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Aston, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Jack may be sent to Conley’s United Methodist Church, 33106 Jolyn’s Way, Lewes, DE 19958.
