A DART bus broadsided a car driven by an 89-year-old Milton man as he was  attempting to make a U-turn on Route 9 near Hudson Road. The accident happened around 10:15 a.m., Dec. 4.

Car driver Samuel C. Young was trapped inside the vehicle for about 20 minutes while a Milton Fire Department crew used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the vehicle’s door. Young was taken to Beebe Medical Center and treated for minor injuries, said Cpl. Gary Fournier, a Delaware State Police spokesman.

Fournier said Young had been driving westbound when he pulled onto the shoulder and began making a U-turn to travel eastbound, but the westbound bus struck the car, pushing it across the roadway.

Neither the bus driver nor any of the six passengers aboard were injured, Fournier said. Eastbound traffic on Route 9 was backed up for about an hour, he said. Young was cited for making an illegal U-turn, Fournier said.
