Sussex Tech's Bitler to play softball at Norfolk State

December 20, 2012

Sussex Technical High School senior Devon Bitler of Millsboro signed a letter of intent to play softball at Norfolk State University in the 2013-14 season. The Virginia school is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division.

Devon will play third base and outfield for the Spartans. Norfolk’s coach Heidi Cavallo saw Devon on television when she was playing in the Senior League World Series and was impressed with her abilities. Devon says she liked the welcoming atmosphere from the team and the school after a visit. She also likes that the school is only three hours away, so her family will be able to travel there to see her play.

Devon plans to continue her studies in athletic health care at Sussex Tech and major in kinesiology at Norfolk State.

Before heading to Norfolk State, however, Devon is looking forward to her senior season at Sussex Tech in spring 2013. She was a member of the 2012 state softball championship team.

“No one expected us to win. We were the underdogs,” said Devon. “But we pulled it together as a team [and won].”

Devon was named to the Henlopen All-Conference Second Team.

Coach John Marvel retired after winning the softball state championship last year, and Chester Davis has been named as his replacement.

“I’m anxious to see how things change,” said Devon.
