I agree with the editorial in the Jan. 10 issue - the Cape Henlopen School District building plan does indeed raise questions for me mostly about the issue of having two elementary schools that serve the same grade levels existing one mile apart in the same town.
This has never made sense to me, but I am well aware of the prejudice that exists in the community that sustains this division. Do people not realize that when their children get into the workplace, they will encounter much racial, cultural and financial diversity?
Even their children's first summer job will be an eye opener, and perhaps unnerving, if they haven't had much interaction with people who are not just like they are.
My daughter went to HOB and is now a junior at Cape Henlopen High School, and is a member of the National Honor Society there. She was in the minority at HOB, and has made out just fine - imagine that! She accepts everyone for who they are inside, whether their family has a new car and nice house or not, and regardless of the color of their skin.
I applaud all the teachers at HOB - they do wonderful work. Do people not realize that we have an African American president? Do they not know we have a female Hispanic on the Supreme Court? Guess not! I think the Cape Henlopen Board of Education should seriously think about integrating HOB and Milton Elementary into one brand new school as part of this building plan, but I doubt that will happen - too many narrow minds in play.
