Shame on Legislature, Markell

January 25, 2013

The following letter was sent to Gov. Jack Markell and Delaware General Assembly with a copy submitted to the Cape Gazette for publication.

Your continued refusal to allow slot machine use by fraternal clubs, in particular, veterans clubs, until legislation is undertaken to amend existing law constitutes undue harassment of Delaware veterans.

I know you realize that slot machines have been in operation in veterans clubs for over 20 years. The slot machine withdrawal has resulted in club employee layoffs, higher drink and menu prices, and less available money for charitable community  donations. You have no control over your state employees if you allow them to all of a sudden enforce a law that has been on the books for all this time.

Unauthorized gambling is common throughout Delaware, and to indiscriminately target veterans is inexcusable. Shame, shame, shame on you !

member, American Legion Post 28 and Amvets Post 2
